The International Development Journal interviews RBAS Regional Director about development assistance after the “Arab Spring"
Ms. Sima Sami Bahous, United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) Assistant Administrator and Director of the Regional Bureau for Arab States (RBAS), visited Japan to attend the Strategic Policy Dialogue with the Government of Japan in mid-November. Although Egypt is still in confusion after “the Arab Spring”, economic development has started under new regimes across the Middle East region. The International Development Journal (IJD) interviewed Ms. Bahous about development assistance after the “Arab Spring.”

UNDP’s Iraq Public Sector Modernisation (I-PSM) Programme works to reform Iraq’s essential services in education, health, water and sanitation. As Phase Two of the programme begins, UNDP met with the President of the Kurdistan Region’s Parliament, Dr. Arsalan Baiz, as well as other members of government to reaffirm mutual commitments to the programme’s objectives.

As part of UNDP’s project on “Empowering civil society organisations in Iraq”, 35 local Non-Governmental Organisations (NGOs) from south, central and north Iraq were trained on proposal writing and project development. This is part of an innovative approach by UNDP to support potential grantee NGO consortia to develop their skills prior to submitting project proposals.

The United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) reconfirms its strong commitment and support to the transitional process through its continued support to Yemen’s update to the Voter Registry, Constitutional Referendum and post-Referendum elections by the signing of an agreement in the amount of 27 million SEK (approximately US $4 million) with the Swedish International Development Cooperation Agency (SIDA) for the implementation of the Support to the Elections during the Transitional Period (SETP) project in Yemen.
