New York — The Joint UN Programme on HIV/AIDS (UNAIDS) and UN Development Programme (UNDP) called today for renewing a provision that allows the world’s poorest countries access to life-saving drugs at costs they can afford, ahead of talks on the issue in Geneva next week.

Sana’a – The United States Agency for International Development (USAID) announced today its support to the Emergency Capacity Development Facility managed by the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP). The initial 1,000,000 USD contribution will be channeled to Yemen via the UNDP Thematic Trust Fund for Crisis Prevention and Recovery through an agreement between the Headquarters of the agencies.

Ramallah – The Palestinian Industrial Estate and Free Zone Authority (PIEFZA) and the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), in the presence of the Representative Office of Japan to the Palestinian Authority, signed an exchange of letters worth USD 1,487,532 to establish an administration building for the Jericho Agro-Industrial Park.

The Governments of Egypt, Jordan, Morocco, Tunisia and Yemen have endorsed a project agreement with the United Nations Volunteers (UNV) programme to facilitate youth volunteerism as a positive and sustainable mechanism for social change. Their endorsement follows a year-long process of national consultations with youth in the region and marks the transition to the implementation phase of the project.

Ms. Sima Sami Bahous, United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) Assistant Administrator and Director of the Regional Bureau for Arab States (RBAS), visited Japan to attend the Strategic Policy Dialogue with the Government of Japan in mid-November. Although Egypt is still in confusion after “the Arab Spring”, economic development has started under new regimes across the Middle East region.
