At the Central Medical Supplies warehouse in North Khartoum: 2.7 million USD worth of medical equipment was officially handed over from UNDP to the federal and State Ministries of Health. The equipment donated by the Global Fund to fight AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria, included Lab and IT equipment as well as 22 vehicles to upgrade andsupport 19 Medical Laboratories, 5 Rural Hospitals and 25 Health Care Centers across the country. The vehicles and IT equipments are intended to strengthen the health management teams at the locality levels.

UNDP Iraq gathered over 100 children from Kurani Ainkawa to clean-up their neighbourhood. Kurani Ainkawa is a poor and socially conservative area at the heart of Erbil. UNDP Iraq is supporting the community to improve its accessibility to basic and social services and improve its socio-economic opportunities.

A National Development Plan Conference was held in Erbil from 11-13 November to develop a unified vision for the future of Iraq. The Government of Iraq is revising the current National Development Plan 2010-2014 to better reflect the emerging development priorities for the period 2013-2017.

I am very pleased to be here today, nearly a year after you concluded the historic agreement for a peaceful transition in Yemen. I am honoured to be able to see for myself your remarkable achievements. I recall my meeting with President Hadi this past September at the United Nations in New York, and I highly commend his leadership. Yemen is a diverse society with an astonishingly rich history and culture. It is a dynamic country whose people deserve prosperity, stability and security.

I thank the World Affairs Council for inviting me to deliver this lecture as part of its ongoing mini-series: “Spotlight on Development Challenges”. As Administrator of the United Nations Development Programme, I find the topic of this lecture series and the Council’s interest in what the world might look like in 2050 particularly relevant to our work to help address one of humanity’s most pressing challenges: how to lift human development while staying within planetary boundaries.

18 young Iraqis living in Jordan participated in a focus group sponsored by UNDP Iraq. The discussions came in support to the work on the National Human Development Report which focuses on challenges faced by Iraqi youth. The meeting helped the report’s researchers better understand reasons behind young Iraqis leaving their homeland and the challenges they face in Jordan; it allowed these young Iraqis to share their perceptions and feelings towards Iraq.

The UN Special Representative distributes certificates to 250 municipalities that participated in the World Disaster Risk Reduction Campaign
The National Council for Scientific Research (CNRS), in partnership with the United Nations and the Disaster Risk Reduction unit at the Prime Minister’s office, organized today, at the Grand Serail, a certificate distribution ceremony to 250 municipalities approximately and union in Lebanon which joined the World Disaster Campaign “My City is Getting Ready”.
