    UNDP responds to internal displaced people from Mosul

    A total of 31,680 families displaced by last week's violence in the cities of Mosul and Tal Afar are seeking shelter in safer areas in the Kurdistan region of Iraq. This new crisis follows massive displacement this year in the western Iraqi governorate of Anbar, where fighting since January has forced some half-a-million people to flee the province.

    National symposium on security sector reform in Iraq focuses on sustainable security solution

    Baghdad – The National Symposium on Security Sector Reform and Governance in Iraq was opened today at Al Nahrain Centre for Strategic Studies in Baghdad in the presence of senior Iraqi Government and United Nations officials. The Symposium will focus on presenting the lessons learned by the United Nations in supporting Security Sector Reform, and on discussing how future national security dialogue in Iraq could benefit from international experience. The event was organized by UNDP in partnership with the National Security Agency of Iraq.

    Model Police Stations Launched in Tunisia

    Hammamet, Tunisia – The first of six UNDP-supported police stations opened in Hammamet, Tunisia last week, part of a programme in support of security sector reform, financed by the Governments of Belgium, Japan and Norway. Five more are currently under construction or renovation.

    Fletcher & Renda head to south Lebanon to follow-up on UK funded projects to host communities

    British Ambassador to Lebanon Tom Fletcher visited south Lebanon where he saw first-hand the UK-funded municipalities Host Communities Programme, implemented by UNDP. The programme will support municipalities to increase delivery of livelihood services in areas of Lebanon most affected by the Syrian refugee influx.

    The Minister of Planning and International Cooperation, His Excellency Mohammed al Saadi, the United Nations Resident Coordinator, Mr. Paolo Lembo, and a representative of the Office of the Special Adviser of the Secretary-General, Mr. Niels Guenther, today signed the Peacebuilding Priority Plan and five initial projects.

    UNDP Iraq inaugurates its new office in Basrah

    Basrah – The Special Representative of the United Nations Secretary-General (SRSG) for Iraq, Mr. Nickolay Mladenov, officially inaugurated UNDP’s sub-office for southern Iraq in Basra. Held at the premises of sub-office, the inauguration ceremony was attended by local officials and civil society leaders, including the Chief Justice of the Basra Appellate Court, the Head of the Police Force in Basra, the Head of the Development Committee of the Basra Provincial Council, and members of the Provincial Council.

    UNDP and CCCPA sign a project to improve peace and stability in Africa

    The Ministry of Foreign Affairs and UNDP signed today the second phase of support to the Cairo Centre for Conflict Resolution and Peacekeeping in Africa (CCCPA), funded by the Government of Japan. The project document was signed by UNDP Resident Representative Ms. Anita Nirody; Deputy Assistant Foreign Minister for International Cooperation for Development Ambassador Omar Abou Aich, Director of the CCCPA Counsellor Ashraf Swelam.

    Crafting South Kordofan’s sirst locality development plan

    Bethlehem – Today marked an important step forward for girls in the Beit Jala School as they celebrated the inauguration of their new building in the Bethlehem Governorate of the West Bank. The school was funded by the Government of Japan and implemented by UNDP’s Programme of Assistance to the Palestinian People in coordination with the Ministry of Education and Higher Education, and the Municipalities of Bethlehem and Beit Jala.

    UNDP and UN Women sign a USD 29.5 million agreement with the Palestinian Ministries of Justice and Interior

    Ramallah - In a concerted effort to strengthen the rule of law and improve access to justice across the occupied Palestinian territory, the Ministry of Justice, the Ministry of Interior, UN Women and UNDP’s Programme of Assistance to the Palestinian People signed a USD 29.5 million agreement to support the establishment of a viable Palestinian state solidly based on the rule of law, human rights and justice.

    Study on women's roles in private sectors

    Nairobi - Although women make up over 60% of business owners in Somalia, they severely lack equal participation and representation in government and the private sector. Despite these obstacles, women across Somalia are challenging traditional barriers to representation and leadership in the private sector, according to a new United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) study on the Role of Women in the Private Sector in Somalia presented today in Nairobi.
