    Donors’ field visit to UNDP's 'Support to Lebanon Mine Action Programme – Phase II” project

    On Tuesday 12 June, the Lebanese Mine Action Center (LMAC) and the United Nation Development Programme (UNDP) are organizing a field visit for H.E. Mrs. Colette Taquet - Ambassador of Belgium, Mr. Guido Benevento - Director of the Italian Cooperation, and Mr. Robert Watkins – UNDP Resident Representative to the south of Lebanon. A delegation from both Embassies and UNDP will accompany the ambassadors in their field visit to the South. This visit aims at updating the donors on the works implemented by the UNDP “Support to Lebanon Mine Action Programme – Phase II” project. With the target of completing the second phase of the mine action project, UNDP in partnership with LMAC recruited “Norwegian People’s Aid Lebanon” (NPA), an international mine clearance NGO to undertake clearance operations, with 4 multi-skilled clearance teams. The teams will undertake the required cluster munitions operations.

    UNDP Tunisia recognized for work in country's political transition

    Washington — US Friends of UNDP today presented its annual Julia V. Taft Award to the UN Development Program (UNDP) Country Office in Tunisia in recognition of its exceptional work in supporting the North African country’s transition. "In Tunisia, development partners had only small, if any, footprints prior to the change of regime in January 2011. Responses and capacities to support the transition had to be developed rapidly," UNDP Administrator Helen Clark told a reception here. “UNDP’s Country Office in Tunisia rose to the challenge, positioning itself to respond to historic events.”

    Marking Environment Day

    UNDP Iraq participated in an event to mark World Environment Day. The event organised by the Ministry of Environment featured a number of activities including a screening of a film produced by the United Nations on the decade of bio-diversity, a presentation on Green Economy, paying tribute to environment pioneers who used green economy in their work, a play by school children on environment and an exhibition of products made of recycled material.

    Towards a sustainable Sudan: Sudan Rio + 20 Momentum builds in Sudan

    The United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) office in Sudan hosted a high level video conference between Sudan’s delegation to the UN Conference on Sustainable Development (UNCSD) Rio + 20 and UNDP advisors Frank Pinto, lead consultant on Climate Change and Development and Stephen Gitonga, Acting Chief, Sustainable Energy Unit in New York. The videoconference is just one part of UNDP’s broad-based support to the Government in its preparations for the upcoming summit, which also includes consultations, workshops, media and communication and preparations of technical papers and national position.In attendance at UNDP Sudan’s Country Office were the Minster of Environment, Forestry and Physical Development, H.E. Mr. Hassan Abdel Gadir Hilal, Resident and Humanitarian Coordinator, Resident Representative of the UNDP Mr. Ali Al-Za’tari, UNDP Deputy Country Director Programme Mr. Amin Sharkawi, Undersecretary – Ministry of Environment Mr. Babiker Abdalla Ibrahim, and Dr. Anshu Banerjee Representative World Health Organization (WHO) in Sudan. More than 15 participants from government institutions and Sudanese civil society participated in the event, engaging in the robust discussions seeking advice on approach, implementation and the way forward.

    UNDP and UN volunteers mark World Environment Day by cleaning the shores of Gaza

    Gaza Strip - UNDP’s Programme of Assistance to the Palestinian People, in partnership with the United Nations Volunteers programme in the occupied Palestinian territory, marked World Environment Day with a beach cleaning campaign in the Gaza Strip. The campaign is funded by the Government of Japan, through the job creation programme, and implemented in cooperation with six local partners.

    Kuwait's Minister calls for e-waste treatment law overhaul

    Kuwait's Minister of Public Works and Minister of State for Planning and Development Affairs, Dr. Fadhel Safar, stressed the significance of revamping pieces of legislation and laws pertaining to e-waste treatment.     UNDP Live Lebanon and Tetra Pak re-shaping development work in Paradis d’Enfants

    With the aim to engage the private sector in the development initiatives in Lebanon, UNDP Live Lebanon partnered with Tetra Pak to rehabilitate part of Paradis d’Enfants’s playground and promote the school’s quality academics, including the recreational and extracurricular activities as part of the curriculum. In this respect, Tetra Pak volunteers were engaged in the process of beautifying and nurturing the playground hand in hand with the students.

    Lebanese expert expatriate trains ministries on food safety

    In collaboration with the Ministry of Economy and Trade, the UNDP “Transfer of Knowledge Through Expatriate Nationals” project (TOKTEN) is organizing the opening session of the food safety training on Monday 21st of June at 10am, in Mathaf at the Institute of Finance (1st Floor). Professor Fadi Aramouni, the Lebanese food safety expert from Kansas University, will conduct the trainings which aim at building the capacities of the ministries on food safety inspection. From the 21st until 24th of May, Mr. Aramouni will train 140 inspectors from the Ministry of Economy and Trade in the ministry.

    The Saudi Food and Drug Authority (SFDA) was established in 1424H (2003) as an independent body to ensure safety of food and drug products in the Kingdom, reporting directly to the President of the Council of Ministers. The United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) is the lead agency in the UN for country level development cooperation, with over $5billion of activities each year in over 177 countries. UNDP started its presence in Saudi Arabia in 1966 and has supported capacity development projects in areas such as public administration, youth empowerment, energy and environment and economic diversification

    Reintegration services continue to roll out for South Kordofans

    As part of its firm commitment to fulfilling its obligations to provide Reintegration services to ex-combatants in South Kordofan State, Sunday May 20, 2012 saw the signing of a final contract by national NGO, Jasmar with UNDP DDR and its partner SDDRC. This contract which will see the provision of agriculture and livestock reintegration packages for 368 demobilized ex-combatants with disabilities.
