    Today, Jordan marked a historical milestone. It is the first country in the Middle East to meet the deadline set by the Ottawa Mine-Ban Treaty and declare itself free of landmines.

    Launch of the Iraq deprivation report 2011

    In partnership with UNDP, the Ministry of Planning launched the Iraq Deprivation Report 2011 in Baghdad. This report is the second deprivation study that used the Unmet Basic Needs methodology, and shows that 30% of the Iraqi households live in deprived conditions and that 4% of them suffer from severe deprivation.

    Egyptians learn from transition to democracy and social, economic advances in Brazil

    A delegation of Egyptian business leaders and governmental officials wrapped up a two-day visit to Brazil this week and are heading to Chile to learn how the two South American countries transitioned to democracy in the 1980’s and 1990’s respectively, following two decades of military regime.

    Awareness raising workshop on family protection in Basra

    UNDP Iraq held a first of its kind awareness raising workshop in Basra on Family Protection. The workshop provided an overview of UNDP’s Family Support Justice and Security project and the Family Protection Unit in Basra. It identified gaps in treating victims of domestic and gender based violence including the role of Civil Society and the media.

    Energy subsidies in the Arab world costly & inefficent - report

    Six of the world’s ten largest energy subsidizers are found in the Arab world, led by Kuwait, Saudi Arabia, and Qatar. Each of these three countries charges their populations less than a third of international prices for fuel and electricity. While energy subsidies may be seen as achieving some of a country’s objectives, a new UNDP report 'Energy Subsidies in the Arab World' argues they are a costly and inefficient way of doing so.

    About 1,000 innovative business ideas win access to finance in North and South Kordofan states in Sudan

    April 17th marked the Award Ceremony of Business Idea Competition held in El-Obeid City the capital of North Kordofan State. As part of joint MDGs Spanish Fund project for creating Youth Employment in Sudan, UNDP partnered with SUDIA, a local NGO, to organize a Business Ideas Competition for youth.

    Launch of the rehabilitation phase of the Palestinian red crescent society hospital in Gaza

    Gaza – As part of their continuing effort to combat poverty and hunger, representatives from India, Brazil and South Africa, UNDP’s Programme of Assistance to the Palestinian People and the Palestinian Red Crescent Society (PRSC) signed an agreement in the amount of one million Dollars to rehabilitate the PRCS building in the Gaza Strip.

    Under the patronage of H.E Lebanese Prime Minister Mr.Najib Mikati and on the eve of the 37th anniversary of the outbreak of the civil war, the United Nations Development Programme - “Strengthening Civil Peace in Lebanon” Project and UMAM Documentation and Research in partnership with the Delegation of the European Union to Lebanon are organizing a launch event of “The Bus takes the podium: voyages in the memory of Lebanon and its people” initiative on Thursday, April 12, at 11:00 am in UMAM’s Hangar in Haret Hreik, near Al Imam Al Mehdi Mosque. H.E Minister of Foreign Affairs Mr. Adnan Mansour representing H.E Prime Minister Mr. Najib Mikati, UNDP Resident Representative Mr. Robert Watkins, Acting Head of the Delegation of the European Union to Lebanon Mr. Diego Escalona Paturel, UMAM D&R’s Director Mr. Lokman Slim, ministers, parliamentarians, ambassadors, UN agencies representatives and civil society activists will participate in this event. During the ceremony, attendants will visit the Ain el Rummanneh bus which triggered the civil war 37 years ago.
