Cairo– The UNDP “Community of Practice on Electoral Assistance for the Arab Region,” which opened today in Cairo, highlighted two factors of central importance in assisting the conduct of fair and transparent elections in countries which are undergoing major transformations towards democracy: the exchange of experience and coordination between international organizations actively involved in electoral assistance in the region, and understanding mechanisms employed in other countries to guarantee electoral credibility.

First UNDP/global fund country level donor meeting successfully sheds light on Sudan’s progress in public health
Khartoum, Ambassadors from Global Fund donor countries, UN agencies representatives, the Undersecretary of the Federal Ministry of Health, the Country Coordinating Mechanism (CCM) Secretariat, and heads of national programmes for AIDS, TB and Malaria, gathered for the first country-level Global Fund donor meeting in Sudan Tuesday afternoon. The purpose of the meeting was to share the successes of United Nations Development Programme (UNDP)/Global Fund with the Global Fund donors while better acquainting them with the GFATM programmes and goals, after being on the ground for five years in Sudan

UNDP-ART GOLD North Lebanon in partnership with “Les Amis du Liban à Monaco” will inaugurate the newly equipped and rehabilitated dental care unit and kindergarten at Social Development Center in Bab Al Tebbaneh – Tripoli at 12:00pm. This inauguration falls under the UNDP-ART GOLD Lebanon’s project entitled "Rehabilitating and Equipping the dental care unit and kindergarten at the Social Development Center in Bab Al Tebbaneh", in collaboration with the municipality of Tripoli.

UNDP-ART GOLD South Lebanon in partnership with “Les Amis du Liban à Monaco” will inaugurate the newly equipped and rehabilitated theatre at the Bint Jbeil elementary mixed public school. This falls under the ART GOLD project entitled "Upgrading the educational services and extra-curricular activities at the public schools of Bint Jbeil and Blat in South Lebanon".

Baghdad – To commemorate Global Mine Action Day, the Iraqi Ministry of Environment and the United Nations in Iraq held today a press conference on mine action in Iraq at the UNAMI Headquarters in Baghdad. Representatives of national, regional and international media outlets in Iraq listened and interacted with the Deputy Minister of Environment, Dr Kamal Latif, the Head of Humanitarian and Development Office at UNAMI, Mr. Daniel Augstburger, and Major General Hadi Athab, Director of Military Engineering at the Ministry of Defence, who briefed them on Iraq’s continued commitment to building awareness on the dangers of landmines and clearing the country from explosive remnants of war, while supporting the victims who have been affected by them.

The portfolio is an annual snapshot of the impact of landmines and explosive remnants of war in countries or territories with mine action programmes. The portfolio also provides proposals for mine action projects and details their costs. Countries profiled in the 2011 edition of the portfolio have so far secured about 25 percent of the total funding needed for the coming year, leaving a funding gap of $367 million. The largest funding gaps in 2011 are in Iraq ($44 million) and Sudan ($71 million).

Three United Nations organisations sign 2011-2014 programme action plans with the government of Iraq
Baghdad- The United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF), and United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) have today signed their Country Programme Action Plans for their respective 2011-2014 Programmes of Cooperation with the Government of Iraq. The signings endorse the key results the agencies will deliver over the next four years in support of the Government of Iraq’s development agenda.

Port Sudan, Today, the North Sudan DDR Commission (NSDDRC) and the Ministry of Interior, with support from the UNDP- DDR program, opened a two-day small arms and light weapons (SALW) sensitization workshop in Red Sea State, Port Sudan City. This two-day workshop aims to raise awareness at the state and locality level on the dangers of small arms and their proliferation, and discuss small arms control measures that are acceptable to communities. Representatives from state government and ministries as well as localities are taking part in the workshop, which welcomed over 100 participants on its first day.
