    Water access boosts crop production and incomes in Sudan's rural east

    Khartoum - More than 1,000 farmers living in northeast Sudan now have increased harvests and income due to water irrigation equipment provided through an initiative managed by the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP).

    The Government of Germany and UNDP Sign a 3.5 million Euro agreement to create employment opportunities in the West Bank and Gaza Strip

    Jerusalem - As part of its continuing effort to tackle unemployment in the occupied Palestinian territory, the Government of Germany, through its Development Bank (KFW), and the United Nations Development Programme signed an agreement in the amount of 3.5 million Euros on Wednesday May 18, 2011 in Ramallah. Mr. Marc Engelhardt, Head of KfW in the occupied Palestinian territory and Mr. Frode Mauring, UNDP Special Representative of the Administrator attended the ceremony.

    Pre-launching of the national Youth Strategy 2011 – 2015

    The UN House hosted the pre-launching event of the National Youth Strategy 2011 – 2015. In his statement on the occasion, the UN Resident Coordinator and UNDP Resident Representative, Mr. Sayed Aqa said that the strategy was the result of a fruitful partnership between the General Organization for Youth and Sports (GOYS) and through it with ministries, the private sector and civil society. Mr. Aqa reinforced the importance of investing in youth saying that nations should consider “young generation as the citizens of today and not only the generations of tomorrow.”

    UNDP Jordan marks its first social media initiative

    Last week marked UNDP Jordan’s first social media initiative with 66 participants representing five national partners attending the “Social Media Week”. The initiative included daily sessions to introduce targeted national partners of the Governance Portfolio to social media concepts, platforms, strategic approaches and organizational and content policies each in their specific context. As the Country Office itself is planning to develop its social media plan, a learning session for UNDP Country Office and project staff on social media was delivered early in the Week.

    UNDP sign a project with Government to establish capacity development facility in Kingdom of Bahrain

    The Bahrain Institute of Public Administration (BIPA) representing Government of Bahrain and United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) have signed a three-year project to jointly establishing a facility for capacity development to assess and enhance productivity in the public sector. Dr. Raed Benshams, Director General of BIPA signed on behalf of the government of Bahrain, while Mr. Sayed Aqa, Resident Representative signed on behalf of UNDP. All Arabic and English local newspapers were presented in the event.

    UNDP benefits from the sun and implements photovoltaic system for lighting in public schools in South Lebanon

    Lebanon - Teachers and students in public schools of South Lebanon will now benefit from constant electricity power in their classrooms and hallways and will be able to run photocopy machines and computer systems, thanks to photovoltaic panels installed by the Country Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy Demonstration Project for the Recovery of Lebanon (CEDRO).

    Community security initiatives take off in Blue Nile State

    Damazine. On Sunday May 8th, the Sudanese Development Initiative (SUDIA), with the support of the Joint DDR Commission (JDDRC) and the UNDP, officially launched two pilot social reintegration projects, which will be implemented in Blue Nile State. The launch took place in Damazine town, and was attended by more than 30 participants, including representatives from the state government, UN agencies, the media, and civil society.

    Inauguration of photovoltaic system for lighting in Public schools

    On Thursday May 5th, 2011 the Country Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy Demonstration Project for the Recovery of Lebanon (CEDRO), which is a UNDP-managed project funded by the Government of Spain through the Lebanon Recovery Fund, is organizing the inauguration of “photovoltaic systems for lighting in public schools in Lebanon” at the public school of Kfour, in the South, at 11am.

    Arab States can reap significant benefits from international experience in electoral assistance

    Cairo– The UNDP “Community of Practice on Electoral Assistance for the Arab Region,” which opened today in Cairo, highlighted two factors of central importance in assisting the conduct of fair and transparent elections in countries which are undergoing major transformations towards democracy: the exchange of experience and coordination between international organizations actively involved in electoral assistance in the region, and understanding mechanisms employed in other countries to guarantee electoral credibility.

    Moving ahead to improve lives of Iraqis affected by landmines

    Baghdad – To commemorate Global Mine Action Day, the Iraqi Ministry of Environment and the United Nations in Iraq held today a press conference on mine action in Iraq at the UNAMI Headquarters in Baghdad. Representatives of national, regional and international media outlets in Iraq listened and interacted with the Deputy Minister of Environment, Dr Kamal Latif, the Head of Humanitarian and Development Office at UNAMI, Mr. Daniel Augstburger, and Major General Hadi Athab, Director of Military Engineering at the Ministry of Defence, who briefed them on Iraq’s continued commitment to building awareness on the dangers of landmines and clearing the country from explosive remnants of war, while supporting the victims who have been affected by them.
