Towards a green economy: The Palestinian Engineers Association and UNDP launch the national green building guidelines
Ramallah – In an effort to create a healthier and more resource efficient models of construction, the Palestinian Engineers Association and the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) launched the National Green Building Guidelines in partnership with the Palestinian Higher Green Building Council on 23 May 2013 in Ramallah.

Ahmad Al Qatarneh, Secretary General of the Ministry of Environment, stated in his opening remarks “This policy is considered the first of its kind in the field of climate change in the Middle East, as the policy is developed through a national consultation process led by the Ministry of Environment in cooperation with the National Energy Research Center and the United Nations Development Programme as part of the “Developing policy-relevant capacity for implementation of the Global Environmental Conventions in Jordan (CB2)”project.”

UNDP has launched a National Anti-Corruption campaign to educate over 3,000 people on the dangers of corruption. The campaign will last until November 2013 and will consist of 96 workshops educating government officials and non-governmental organisations on the types of corruption, the role of responsible citizens and how to report a suspected violation.

Memorandum of understanding signed between Princess Sumaya University for Technology and Higher Council for Youth
In 2012, UNDP and the Higher Council for Youth joined forces to implement the Youth Participation in Local Governance project. The aim is to use innovative methods and new media to foster Jordanian youth political participation by increasing their awareness about local governance and political participation at the local level . The project identified ‘gamification’ as a tool to spread more awareness about civic engagement.

Mogadishu, Somalia – Every year, a staggering quarter of a million tonnes of charcoal is exported from Somalia to Gulf countries. To produce this amount, 4.4 million trees are cut down, and 72,900 hectares of land cleared. In a country already prone to natural disasters such as flooding and drought, the impact this has on the natural environment and the people who rely on it for their livelihoods has proven devastating.
