    New UNDP Special Representative arrives at the occupied Palestinian territory

    Jerusalem - UNDP Administrator, Helen Clark, appointed Mr. Frode Mauring as her Special Representative in the occupied Palestinian territory, to replace Mr. Jens Toyberg-Frandzen, who retired at the end of September 2010 and Mr. Timothy Rothermel who was serving as Special Representative at interimduring the transition phase.

    UNDP supports training of 50 Sudanese judges to promote good governance and rule of law

    The Sudan Judiciary and the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) have launched today a comprehensive training workshop targeting subordinate court judges at the Judiciary House in Khartoum. Fifty judges from different states are to participate in this four-week workshop which is aimed at raising the capacity of the judges to effectively and fairly apply the law and deliver justice.

    Ex-combatants and community members in Southern Kordofan jointly acquire new skills

    Kadugli– Today, the Southern Kordofan state government, the UNDP and the Japanese International Cooperation Agency (JICA) officially launched a vocational training programme for ex-combatants and community members in the state. The programme will support a total of 215 participants who will be trained over a period of six-months. This training is an integral component of the Disarmament, Demobilization and Reintegration (DDR) programme, and aims to facilitate and accelerate the economic and social reintegration of ex-combatants and women associated with armed forces into society.

    Government Representatives and Community Leaders discuss small arms and light weapons control in Kassala

    Kassala, 19 January 2011. Over 100 participants including representatives from state government, ministries and localities met in Kassala City to deliberate small arms control measures that are acceptable to communities. These deliberations were part of a two-day sensitization workshop on Small Arms and Light Weapons (SALW), which aims to raise awareness at the state and locality level on the dangers of small arms and their proliferation. The workshop is organized by the North Sudan Disarmament, Demobilization and Reintegration Commission (NSDDRC) and the Ministry of Interior, with UNDP support.

    UNDP Iraq launches a comprehensive legal training programme for over 400 Iraqi judges and legal officials.

    The Iraqi Higher Judicial Council and UNDP Iraq have jointly launched a comprehensive legal training programme for Iraqi Judges and legal officials in Erbil. The programme consists of 23 training courses on a range of legal and administrative topics, supporting judges and legal staff to work most effectively and promote justice in Iraq. The training programme is assisted by the European Union, which has an ongoing commitment to promote justice and the rule of law in Iraq, and the Iraqi Trust Fund.
