Fostering youth entrepreneurship and innovation in Yemen
Sana’a - The United Nations Development Programme and the Government of Yemen launched today the Youth Innovation and Creativity Award, with vibrant participation of 600 youth, Government officials and the international community.
The Government of Yemen prioritized job creation, in particular for youth during the transitional period. The Youth Innovation and Creativity Award aims to mobilize the ingenuity and dynamic potential of young Yemenis as well as to create employment. It is an opportunity for the large unemployed youth population of Yemen to confront the country's development challenges.
The Award ceremony was an occasion to exchange experiences and recipes of success. Mohammed Abdu Saeed, an entrepreneur, explained to youth how he has created his business empire from a small shop in Aden. Nadia Al Sakkaf, the Business for Peace Winner 2013, also provided inspirational examples how every success starts with an idea, and for young Yemenis to display their musical talents.
“The youth should not rely on the central authorities and start their their own projects.” said the Minister of Industry and Trade.
“Lack of employment and prospect for the youth has been at the basis of the so called Arab Spring, without addressing this priority, any political transition risk being unsustainable. This is why UNDP supports national partners in fostering youth as the engine of the transition.” highlighted UNDP Senior Director, Gustavo Gonzalez.
As part of the launch ceremony, the Government officials, UNDP Senior Director and the Japanese Ambassador conducted a field visit to monitor ongoing efforts on the ground and boost business innovation. They visited ARWA Plastics Factory and Shamlan Water Company as one of the private sector partners were youth beneficiaries are currently trained on the job.
The offer-demand matching initiative is implemented by a Yemen Education for Employment, a national NGO. During this visit, the chairman of the NGO, Alwan Shaibani, emphasized the importance of to work closely with the private sector to generate employment.
