UNDP Iraq participated in an event to mark World Environment Day. The event organised by the Ministry of Environment featured a number of activities including a screening of a film produced by the United Nations on the decade of bio-diversity, a presentation on Green Economy, paying tribute to environment pioneers who used green economy in their work, a play by school children on environment and an exhibition of products made of recycled material.

Kuwait's Minister of Public Works and Minister of State for Planning and Development Affairs, Dr. Fadhel Safar, stressed the significance of revamping pieces of legislation and laws pertaining to e-waste treatment. Addressing an important electronic waste treatment conference supported by UNDP Kuwait, the minister said it is necessary to overhaul e-waste treatment laws.

Khartoum - The Regional Conference on Small Arms and Light Weapons (SALW) Control concluded on May 23rd with the agreement of Sudan, Central African Republic,Chad, Democratic Republic of Congo and Libya to improve their cooperation and coordination through the creation of a regional mechanism that will aim to control, manage and safeguard against the proliferation of small arms and illegal trafficking of weapons

With the aim to engage the private sector in the development initiatives in Lebanon, UNDP Live Lebanon partnered with Tetra Pak to rehabilitate part of Paradis d’Enfants’s playground and promote the school’s quality academics, including the recreational and extracurricular activities as part of the curriculum. In this respect, Tetra Pak volunteers were engaged in the process of beautifying and nurturing the playground hand in hand with the students.

As part of its firm commitment to fulfilling its obligations to provide Reintegration services to ex-combatants in South Kordofan State, Sunday May 20, 2012 saw the signing of a final contract by national NGO, Jasmar with UNDP DDR and its partner SDDRC. This contract which will see the provision of agriculture and livestock reintegration packages for 368 demobilized ex-combatants with disabilities.

UNDP Kuwait has been making great efforts to develop a national survey that is set to spearhead the Youth Programme’s future initiatives. This new project is one of a number of assessments the programme is undergoing to better cater to the needs of youth nationally. Little to no research exists on youth in Kuwait, a common challenge for most human development planners. Despite that, Kuwaiti youth have much to offer and are well aware of the challenges that make it difficult for youth empowerment to be more than a common reality in Kuwait.

Kuwait has marked its commitment to improving traffic initiatives last week. In collaboration with UNDP Kuwait, the Ministry of Interior and the Government have ensured the implementation of the UN resolutions for improving road safety in the country. The event marked the first anniversary of the integration of the plan concerning the advancement of national traffic initiatives.

The Ministry of Awqaf and Islamic affairs, in collaboration with UNDP Kuwait, has set up an initiative to gear some religious discourse in the way of sustainable development. The project has been created in order to promote local and public awareness of development and its advantages to the community and individuals. The initiative, titled "The Development Of Religious Discourse For Sustainable Development," will improve religious leaders' role in development and encourage the participation of the public through a series of workshops geared to provide the necessary understanding of development and its impact on society.

In partnership with UNDP, the Ministry of Planning launched the Iraq Deprivation Report 2011 in Baghdad. This report is the second deprivation study that used the Unmet Basic Needs methodology, and shows that 30% of the Iraqi households live in deprived conditions and that 4% of them suffer from severe deprivation.

A delegation of Egyptian business leaders and governmental officials wrapped up a two-day visit to Brazil this week and are heading to Chile to learn how the two South American countries transitioned to democracy in the 1980’s and 1990’s respectively, following two decades of military regime.
