    Awareness raising workshop on family protection in Basra

    UNDP Iraq held a first of its kind awareness raising workshop in Basra on Family Protection. The workshop provided an overview of UNDP’s Family Support Justice and Security project and the Family Protection Unit in Basra. It identified gaps in treating victims of domestic and gender based violence including the role of Civil Society and the media.

    Energy subsidies in the Arab world costly & inefficent - report

    Six of the world’s ten largest energy subsidizers are found in the Arab world, led by Kuwait, Saudi Arabia, and Qatar. Each of these three countries charges their populations less than a third of international prices for fuel and electricity. While energy subsidies may be seen as achieving some of a country’s objectives, a new UNDP report 'Energy Subsidies in the Arab World' argues they are a costly and inefficient way of doing so.

    UNDP Sudan celebrates Mother’s Day

    Staff at the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP)Sudan paid tribute today to their mothers, sisters, spouses and daughters in celebration of Mother’s day. Speeches were given, poetry recited and joyful signing accompanied the ceremony to mark this important day in everyone’s life. National and international staff members reminisced about their upbringing in different parts of the world only to agree on the central role played by mothers and the positive influence they had on everyone’s lives.

    SMS campaign in Missan gives citizens a voice

    Around 78% of Iraqis use mobile telephones and 12% own a personal computer. In the Missan governorate, staff utilised the rise in technology amongst Iraqis by using a Short Message Service (SMS) campaign to learn more about the needs of citizens to increase public participation in local development matters.

    60 million Lebanese pounds for each winning municipality in the "Madinati Khadraa" competition

    Under the patronage and in the presence of the Director General of Administrative and Local Councils at the Ministry of Interior and Municipalities, Mr. Khalil El Hajal, CEDRO project - United Nations Development Programme – announced the three winning projects in the "Madinati Khadraa" competition and distributed 60 million Lebanese Pounds to each winner to start implementing their environmental project in a small ceremony that took place at the UNDP premises.

    Legal Database Handed Over to Government

    During a ceremony in Beirut on 8 December 2011 UNDP Iraq handed over the Legal Database to the Government of Iraq represented by Higher Judicial Council. The project designed to collect and maintain the corpus of the Iraqi official legal documents provides easy access to the Iraqi legislations and their enforcement.
