UNDP Iraq held a first of its kind awareness raising workshop in Basra on Family Protection. The workshop provided an overview of UNDP’s Family Support Justice and Security project and the Family Protection Unit in Basra. It identified gaps in treating victims of domestic and gender based violence including the role of Civil Society and the media.

Six of the world’s ten largest energy subsidizers are found in the Arab world, led by Kuwait, Saudi Arabia, and Qatar. Each of these three countries charges their populations less than a third of international prices for fuel and electricity. While energy subsidies may be seen as achieving some of a country’s objectives, a new UNDP report 'Energy Subsidies in the Arab World' argues they are a costly and inefficient way of doing so.

Staff at the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP)Sudan paid tribute today to their mothers, sisters, spouses and daughters in celebration of Mother’s day. Speeches were given, poetry recited and joyful signing accompanied the ceremony to mark this important day in everyone’s life. National and international staff members reminisced about their upbringing in different parts of the world only to agree on the central role played by mothers and the positive influence they had on everyone’s lives.

Under the patronage and in the presence of the Director General of Administrative and Local Councils at the Ministry of Interior and Municipalities, Mr. Khalil El Hajal, CEDRO project - United Nations Development Programme – announced the three winning projects in the "Madinati Khadraa" competition and distributed 60 million Lebanese Pounds to each winner to start implementing their environmental project in a small ceremony that took place at the UNDP premises.

Sana’a - After months of chaos and the ghost of civil war, Yemen marked a new chapter Tuesday as millions of Yemenis voted to end the turmoil and move towards a new future. The presidential election is the first critical benchmark in a two-year transitional period, and voters turned out in large numbers, with many hoping that this election will bring a peaceful transition to democracy and development.

Yemenis head to the polls today to bring a close to more than three decades of President Ali Abdullah Saleh’s rule. Nairobi, Kenya – The combination of a massive scale-up in humanitarian assistance and an exceptional harvest have helped relieve famine conditions in Somalia, but interrupting assistance risks these gains, according to analysis released today by the Food and Agricultural Organisation’s Food Security and Nutrition Analysis Unit (FSNAU) and the Famine Early Warning System (FEWS NET).

During a ceremony in Beirut on 8 December 2011 UNDP Iraq handed over the Legal Database to the Government of Iraq represented by Higher Judicial Council.
