    Launching event of 'the bus takes the podium: voyages in the memory of Lebanon and its people”

    Under the patronage of H.E Lebanese Prime Minister Mr.Najib Mikati and on the eve of the 37th anniversary of the outbreak of the civil war, the United Nations Development Programme - “Strengthening Civil Peace in Lebanon” Project and UMAM Documentation and Research in partnership with the Delegation of the European Union to Lebanon are organizing a launch event of “The Bus takes the podium: voyages in the memory of Lebanon and its people” initiative on Thursday, April 12, at 11:00 am in UMAM’s Hangar in Haret Hreik, near Al Imam Al Mehdi Mosque. H.E Minister of Foreign Affairs Mr. Adnan Mansour representing H.E Prime Minister Mr. Najib Mikati, UNDP Resident Representative Mr. Robert Watkins, Acting Head of the Delegation of the European Union to Lebanon Mr. Diego Escalona Paturel, UMAM D&R’s Director Mr. Lokman Slim, ministers, parliamentarians, ambassadors, UN agencies representatives and civil society activists will participate in this event. During the ceremony, attendants will visit the Ain el Rummanneh bus which triggered the civil war 37 years ago.

    Equator Prize winners announced, awards will be presented during Rio+20

    New York — The Equator Initiative announced yesterday the names of twenty-five local community groups to receive the Equator Prize 2012 in recognition of their outstanding contributions to sustainable development.     Urgent international action needed to combat social inequalities and environmental risks, UN Secretary-General tells Istanbul forum

    UNDP’s first Global Human Development Forum starts today in Istanbul. Social justice and environmental protection are equally urgent and intrinsically linked universal goals, with coordinated global action needed on both fronts at the UN’s ‘Rio+20’ Conference on Sustainable Development in June, Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon said in a message to an audience of development experts, civil society leaders and government officials at the first Global Human Development Forum here today.

    UNDP and Shell Iraq sign partnership agreement in southern Iraq

    Raising awareness on critical environmental issues to 800 students:"Nature's Festival" Play

    Under the High Patronage of the President of the Council of Ministers, H.E. Mr. Najib Mikati, the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) – Energy and Environment programme – is launching a theatrical production entitled: “Nature’s Festival” on Monday, 20th of February at 10:00am at the UNESCO Palace. Representing the Prime Minister, H.E. Mr. Nazem Khoury, Minister of Environment, will attend the opening ceremony alongside H.E. Spanish Ambassador Mr. Juan Carlos Gafo, the UNDP Resident Representative Mr. Robert Watkins, ambassadors and environmental NGOs, in addition to 800 students from the public elementary schools. The play targets children whose age range varies between 6 and 10 years old and aims to raise their awareness on the critical environmental issues and challenges that face Lebanon.

    UNDP Response to the Famine in Somalia

    In response to the famine, which was declared in July 2011, UNDP allocated US$ 3 million (including 1 million from Central Emergency Relief Fund - CERF) to rapidly expand its emergency employment generation activities to include affected areas. This included cash-for-work initiatives to rehabilitate community and rural assets, and improve purchasing power of food and other essential items for households. Activities were expanded to drought-affected communities in Bakol, Gedo, Hiran, Galgudud, Banadir regions and, particularly, in the Afgooye corridor in Southern Central Somalia.

    Democracy is necessary but not enough, says UNDP’s Arab Development Challenges Report

    Cairo – Economic issues, central to the Arab uprisings, trail behind political issues in the post-revolution public discourse between the State, civil society and the International community, asserts the Arab Development challenges Report 2011, discussed today in Cairo in a public meeting which brought together representatives of a wide range of Egyptian political forces, academia and development professionals. The Report warns that if economic challenges (particularly social justice) are not addressed properly, they risk thwarting Arab progress on democratic transitions.

    UNDP and WHO hand over first specialized TB Hospital to the Government of Iraq

    The United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) and the World Health Organisation (WHO) handed over the first specialised Tuberculosis (TB) hospital to the Government of Iraq at a ceremony. The Hospital is located in the Sulimaniya Governorate, and will be supported by the Federal Government and the Kurdistan Regional Government. The KRG Minister of Health, Dr. Tahir Hawrami, and officials from the national TB programme in Baghdad, were also present at the ceremony.

    Norwegian United Nations worker held in Yemen, released unharmed

    Sana’a – The UN staff member, who has been held in Yemen since 15 January 2012, arrived today in a UN safe haven in Sana’a after he was released earlier in Ma’rib. He is in good health and is receiving standard medical examinations and psychological counselling. He has been in touch with his family and will be reunited with them in Norway soon.
