Prime Minister Salam Fayyad inaugurates the Jericho Agro-Industrial Road project funded by the government of Japan and implemented by UNDP
Jerusalem– A new road connecting the Jericho wholesale market and the future agro industrial zone was inaugurated today in Jericho in addition to the laying of a cornerstone for the future site of the Jericho Agro-Industrial Park (JAIP). The projects funded by the Government of Japan in the amount of US$ 3.1 million are slated to support the (JAIP) project.

Cairo – This week, Egypt presented its report on the 2010 Millennium Development Goals (MDGs), entitled: Egypt’s Progress Towards Achieving the MDGs 2010 at the MDGs Review Summit convening at the United Nations General Assembly. The heads of State and Government, have gathered at the UN Headquarters in New York from 20 to 22 September 2010 to reaffirm their commitment to work together for a better world. With only five years left until the 2015 deadline to achieve the Millennium Development Goals, UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon has called on world leaders to attend the summit to accelerate progress towards the MDGs.

BAGHDAD - In a report published today, the Government of Iraq and the United Nations presented the progress made in a number of areas towards achieving the eight Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) in Iraq. These areas are: reducing hunger and child mortality and promoting gender equality. However, there is slower progress reported in other crucial areas: enrolment in primary education, unemployment and access to safe and reliable water and sanitation services.

Khartoum - The Government of Japan will provide a contribution to the UN in the amount of approximately $8.17 million to assist the conduct of the referenda in Sudan. The contribution will be channeled through the Referenda Basket Fund managed by the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP). The funding will enable critical assistance to the newly established Southern Sudan Referendum Commission, and support key activities such as voter registration, civic and voter education, media training, domestic observation, assistance to protection and active participation of women, and strengthening of the Joint Integrated Police Units in Abyei.

Khartoum, a new UN Joint Programme on peace-building and conflict prevention is set to make a start in South Kordofan and Warrap. The initiative involves the Government of National Unity, the Government of Southern Sudan, and eight international agencies based in Sudan and is backed by the Spanish Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) Achievement Fund.

Khartoum, Self-employment is an effective antidote to counter the rising problem of youth unemployment in the three Northern States of South Kordofan, North Kordofan and Blue Nile State. Technical and vocational training institutions are in place throughout the three states, however, in most cases these institutions are in dire need of upgrading their physical infrastructure, their training equipment and their curriculum. These technical schools when adequately rehabilitated will ensure a steady supply of young and skilled workers with vocations that are suited to the local demands of the markets in each of the three states. These are just some of the findings from a Youth and Labour Market Survey, released here today. The findings were released at a Workshop that was inaugurated by the Federal Minister of Youth and Sports, H.E. Mr. Haj Magid Siwar.

Helen Clark praises Bahrain’s human development progress and promises continued cooperation to support Bahrain’s development vision for the future
Manama –-- UNDP Administrator Helen Clark met today with HRH, Prince Khalifa bin Salman al-Khalifa, Prime Minister of Bahrain during her visit to the kingdom. The Prime Minister valued UNDP’s contributions to advance development in the kingdom and expressed his wish to further strengthen this partnership especially in facilitating the sharing of best practices of development experiences between Bahrain and the rest of the world. Other areas of cooperation discussed include addressing the challenges of climate change; food security; expanding women’s political and economic participation; and sustaining progress towards the achievement of the Millennium Development Goals.

Riyadh – UNDP Administrator Helen Clark met on Saturday with Prince Saud Al-Faisal Al Saud, Minister of Foreign Affairs, during her visit to the Kingdom—the first by a UNDP Administrator. They discussed Saudi Arabia’s expanding support to global development efforts, particularly its assistance to humanitarian and post-crisis recovery all over the world and its recent pledge to recovery efforts in Haiti after the recent earthquake.

New York, UNDP Administrator Helen Clark met today with the Ambassador of the Kingdom of Bahrain to the United Nations, H.E. Mr. Tawfeeq Almansoor. During their meeting, the Ambassador presented the Administrator with a check of US$ 1 million as Bahrain´s contribution to recovery efforts in Haiti. UNDP will be using these funds for the Haiti Recovery Programme, and the contribution will go to the UNDP Cash for Work Programme to help the people of Haiti.
