    Report acknowledges need for development in Iraq

    BAGHDAD - In a report published today, the Government of Iraq and the United Nations presented the progress made in a number of areas towards achieving the eight Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) in Iraq. These areas are: reducing hunger and child mortality and promoting gender equality. However, there is slower progress reported in other crucial areas: enrolment in primary education, unemployment and access to safe and reliable water and sanitation services.

    Japan offers 8.17 million USD to support referendum in Sudan

    Khartoum - The Government of Japan will provide a contribution to the UN in the amount of approximately $8.17 million to assist the conduct of the referenda in Sudan. The contribution will be channeled through the Referenda Basket Fund managed by the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP). The funding will enable critical assistance to the newly established Southern Sudan Referendum Commission, and support key activities such as voter registration, civic and voter education, media training, domestic observation, assistance to protection and active participation of women, and strengthening of the Joint Integrated Police Units in Abyei.

    UNDP Administrator deeply saddened by fatal bus crash in Jordan

    Ms. Helen Clark, UNDP Administrator, is deeply saddened by the tragic bus accident yesterday evening in Jordan. The crash claimed the lives of five persons and a number of others were injured en route to the Dead Sea.

    UN rolls out new initiative for conflict prevention in South Kordofan and warrap states

    Khartoum, a new UN Joint Programme on peace-building and conflict prevention is set to make a start in South Kordofan and Warrap. The initiative involves the Government of National Unity, the Government of Southern Sudan, and eight international agencies based in Sudan and is backed by the Spanish Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) Achievement Fund.

    New youth labour market survey: need for promoting self-employment in three states of north

    Khartoum, Self-employment is an effective antidote to counter the rising problem of youth unemployment in the three Northern States of South Kordofan, North Kordofan and Blue Nile State. Technical and vocational training institutions are in place throughout the three states, however, in most cases these institutions are in dire need of upgrading their physical infrastructure, their training equipment and their curriculum. These technical schools when adequately rehabilitated will ensure a steady supply of young and skilled workers with vocations that are suited to the local demands of the markets in each of the three states. These are just some of the findings from a Youth and Labour Market Survey, released here today. The findings were released at a Workshop that was inaugurated by the Federal Minister of Youth and Sports, H.E. Mr. Haj Magid Siwar.

    Manama –-- UNDP Administrator Helen Clark met today with HRH, Prince Khalifa bin Salman al-Khalifa, Prime Minister of Bahrain during her visit to the kingdom.     Helen Clark emphasizes growing role of the Kingdom in addressing global development challenges

    Bahrain presents UNDP with a US$ 1 million contribution to Haiti recovery efforts

    New York, UNDP Administrator Helen Clark met today with the Ambassador of the Kingdom of Bahrain to the United Nations, H.E. Mr. Tawfeeq Almansoor. During their meeting, the Ambassador presented the Administrator with a check of US$ 1 million as Bahrain´s contribution to recovery efforts in Haiti. UNDP will be using these funds for the Haiti Recovery Programme, and the contribution will go to the UNDP Cash for Work Programme to help the people of Haiti.
