New York/Geneva - The ongoing conflict in Syria is undermining development, not only inside Syria, where the human consequences of the conflict are devastating – but also across the region, said the UN Development Programme (UNDP) at the launch of a US$4.4 billion humanitarian appeal for the victims of the crisis presented today by the UN in Geneva.

UN agencies and partners launch largest ever humanitarian appeal for Syrians: US$4.4 billion needed for emergency aid for 2013
Geneva - Millions of ordinary men, women and children are bearing the brunt of the brutal conflict in Syria, said Emergency Relief Coordinator, Valerie Amos and High Commissioner for Refugees, Antonio Guterres, as they appealed today for an additional US$3.1 billion to meet growing humanitarian needs in Syria and among refugees in the surrounding region this year. The total requirements for the whole of 2013 are $4.4 billion.

Sana'a - The United Kingdom, Sweden and Japan announced today a contribution of US $15,200,000 in support of the coming voter registration, Referendum and electoral process in Yemen. This support will be channeled through the Multi-donors Basket Fund, administered by the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), and will serve to bolster the implementation of the Support to the Elections during the Transitional Period (SETP) project in Yemen.

To produce this amount, 4.4 million trees are cut down, and 72,900 hectares of land cleared.
