President of the Republic of Yemen, Mr. Abdo Rabbo Mansour Hadi, met on Tuesday United Nations Development Programme Administrator, Ms. Helen Clark, in New York.

President Hadi outlined the crisis of Yemen as a concurrent Political, Security and Economic crisis.

Following the GCC agreement, the country is now moving ahead positively and important achievements have been made.   Yemen is starting the national dialogue, which will be an important milestone.    There are serious socio-economic issues that need to be addressed, for example the challenge of poverty and youth unemployment.  There are 60,000 university graduates who are not able to find jobs since 10 years. It is important that we promote and encourage economic development and investment as pillars of peace and stability. The President expressed the need for the UNDP’s support in meeting these important challenges.

The Administrator confirmed that Yemen is a priority country for UNDP and we will deploy every effort possible to support the President and the Government of Yemen in their effort to put the country on the right track.  She expressed confidence in the Resident Representative of UNDP, Mr. Ismail Ould Cheikh Ahmed, and the Regional Director to lead the UNDP’s efforts.  She also expressed support for helping set up a multi-partners trust fund to help in the socio-economic recovery of Yemen.
