Baghdad – To commemorate Global Mine Action Day, the Iraqi Ministry of Environment and the United Nations in Iraq held today a press conference on mine action in Iraq at the UNAMI Headquarters in Baghdad. Representatives of national, regional and international media outlets in Iraq listened and interacted with the Deputy Minister of Environment, Dr Kamal Latif, the Head of Humanitarian and Development Office at UNAMI, Mr. Daniel Augstburger, and Major General Hadi Athab, Director of Military Engineering at the Ministry of Defence, who briefed them on Iraq’s continued commitment to building awareness on the dangers of landmines and clearing the country from explosive remnants of war, while supporting the victims who have been affected by them.

Port Sudan, Today, the North Sudan DDR Commission (NSDDRC) and the Ministry of Interior, with support from the UNDP- DDR program, opened a two-day small arms and light weapons (SALW) sensitization workshop in Red Sea State, Port Sudan City. This two-day workshop aims to raise awareness at the state and locality level on the dangers of small arms and their proliferation, and discuss small arms control measures that are acceptable to communities. Representatives from state government and ministries as well as localities are taking part in the workshop, which welcomed over 100 participants on its first day.

Jerusalem - UNDP Administrator, Helen Clark, appointed Mr. Frode Mauring as her Special Representative in the occupied Palestinian territory, to replace Mr. Jens Toyberg-Frandzen, who retired at the end of September 2010 and Mr. Timothy Rothermel who was serving as Special Representative at interimduring the transition phase.

Kadugli– Today, the Southern Kordofan state government, the UNDP and the Japanese International Cooperation Agency (JICA) officially launched a vocational training programme for ex-combatants and community members in the state. The programme will support a total of 215 participants who will be trained over a period of six-months. This training is an integral component of the Disarmament, Demobilization and Reintegration (DDR) programme, and aims to facilitate and accelerate the economic and social reintegration of ex-combatants and women associated with armed forces into society.

Damascus - The Ministry of Electricity and the Planning and International Cooperation Commission in Cooperation with the United Nations Development Programme signed today the project document of energy efficiency code project in the building sector in the Syrian Arab Republic, at the headquarters of the Commission at 10:00 a.m. Dr. Amer Hussni Loutfi, Head of the Commission of Planning and International Cooperation, Dr. Ahmad Qussay Kayyali, Minister of Electricity, and Mr. Issmail Ould Cheikh Ahmed, UNDP resident representative in Syria, attended it.

Kadugli, The Southern Kordofan Reconciliation and Peaceful Coexistence Mechanism (RPCM) and UNDP’s Crisis and Recovery Mapping and Analysis (CRMA) and Conflict Reduction Programme (CRP)-supported community interaction in Al Buram locality has enabled the Shatt Nuba and Rawawga Hawazma tribes to jointly decide on interventions for consolidation of peace and reconciliation. Efforts to bring the two communities together were part of a two-day workshop that concluded , here today.

Government Representatives and Community Leaders discuss small arms and light weapons control in Kassala
Kassala, 19 January 2011. Over 100 participants including representatives from state government, ministries and localities met in Kassala City to deliberate small arms control measures that are acceptable to communities. These deliberations were part of a two-day sensitization workshop on Small Arms and Light Weapons (SALW), which aims to raise awareness at the state and locality level on the dangers of small arms and their proliferation. The workshop is organized by the North Sudan Disarmament, Demobilization and Reintegration Commission (NSDDRC) and the Ministry of Interior, with UNDP support.

UNDP Iraq launches a comprehensive legal training programme for over 400 Iraqi judges and legal officials.
The Iraqi Higher Judicial Council and UNDP Iraq have jointly launched a comprehensive legal training programme for Iraqi Judges and legal officials in Erbil. The programme consists of 23 training courses on a range of legal and administrative topics, supporting judges and legal staff to work most effectively and promote justice in Iraq. The training programme is assisted by the European Union, which has an ongoing commitment to promote justice and the rule of law in Iraq, and the Iraqi Trust Fund.

Kuwait – The International Donors and Investors Conference on East Sudan under the patronage of His Highness the Esteemed Amir of Kuwait Sheikh Sabah Al Ahmad Al Jaber Al Sabah and by the Prime Minister of Kuwait, H.H Sheikh Nasser Al-Mohammed Al-Ahmed Al-Jaber Al-Sabah, ended this morning. The grand total of pledges and planned contributions exceeds 3 billion US dollars, including the commitment from the Government of Sudan.

Kuwait – The International Donors and Investors Conference for East Sudan inaugurated by the Prime Minister of Kuwait, H.H Sheikh Nasser Al-Mohammed Al-Ahmed Al-Jaber Al-Sabah, commenced this morning. In his opening speech the Prime Minister said, the main interest of the participating countries is to “aid the brotherly nation of Sudan in resolving the conflicts and challenges that it is facing at present and move forward towards development under the umbrella of peace and security”. The Government of Sudan out of their national commitment to improve conditions in eastern Sudan, came to the table with a pledge of 1,572, 000,000 US dollars. Daraa – Under the patronage of H.E. The UNDP Resident Representative, Ms. Marta Ruedas, the Ambassador of the Switzerland in Lebanon, H.E. Ms. Ruth Flint and the LPDC President Me. Maya Majzoub will sign an Agreement to support the UNDP project “Support to the Lebanese Palestinian Dialogue Committee” funded by the Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation (SDC) for a total amount of 300 thousand dollars. The ceremony will take place on Friday 26th of November at 9:30am at the Swiss Embassy premises in Ashrafieh (Bourj El Ghazal building, 14th floor).
