Lebanon is paying a heavy price for the ongoing Syria crisis. Hard won development gains and the country’s precious stability are threatened, making the Syrian crisis not only a humanitarian and development crisis for Syrians, but also a development and stability crisis for Lebanon.

"Now is the time for action to support resilience" - says a report released today by the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) and the Overseas Development Institute (ODI) about the impact of the Syria crisis in the sub-region. It is against the backdrop of the international community’s inability to resolve, let alone finance the response to the crisis in Syria, that the Top Donors Group for Syria will meet in Kuwait City tomorrow, Wednesday, 18 June.

This year’s International Women’s Day theme – Equality for Women is Progress for All – states a simple truth. No country will reach its full potential if its female citizens do not enjoy full equality. As the 2015 end date of the Millennium Development Goals nears, and as discussion on the next global development agenda intensifies, there is strong momentum for achieving development with equity, including by eradicating gender inequality and empowering women and girls.

Members of the Arab States Regional United Nations Development Group met yesterday, together with colleagues from the World Bank, the United Nations Relief and Works Agency, and the Resident Coordinators for Syria, Lebanon, Iraq and of course Jordan. Enjoying the hospitality of Amman, we came together to discuss our approaches for supporting people, communities and States under stress as a result of the Syria conflict.

Good Afternoon. I am pleased to be here. I come from a region, and I represent a Region that is in crisis today. I also come and represent a UN Agency, UNDP, that is doing its utmost to help the region in its quest for democracy and human dignity.
